Before beginning with the story of the Trio Matamoros, we should give some background about the era during which they lived and when they developed their fantastic artistic career.
Those were the days when the Cuban Presidency was being contested by Gerardo Machado and Mario Garcia Menocal, and history repeated itself: discrimination, hunger, unemployment, these were the dramatic times that the Trio Matamoros and Ciro Rodriguez were faced with.
We are dealing with the Trio Matamoros and its members Miguel Cueto and Ciro.
The meeting with Miguel Matamoros took place on May 8, 1925 when he was taken by Cueto to Miguel Matamoros’ birthday; Miguel himself tells it this way: a young man named Ciro came to my birthday: that was the day we three sang together for the first time; I liked his voice and it harmonized well with mine, he was a good second voice and he accompanied me on the maracas; I recommended him because he had a respectable voice and he showed that when he sang with famous performers of the era; before that he had already been introduced to the music world by Sindo Garay who knew about Ciro’s voice and his musical and performing qualities from the age of 14. When he was a teenager, Ciro’s voice changed and he became a baritone and that was how he joined different troubadours in Santiago de Cuba, among these were Guarionex Garay (Sindo’s son) Gabriel Rubio, Virgilio Porlay, Panchin Guardiola and Manuel Poveda.
