BIOGRAPHY

Approaching the Cuban traditional music as a artistic expression, was the aim of six talented musicians, leaded by José Leopoldo Alvarez Macias, Cuban vocalist and musician to found in 1990 the Cubavana Sextet. Since then and up to the moment their art has been faithful to the initial purpose, just for this reason, they are critically revered in each appearance in Cubaand abroad.

Adroit tuning, versatility of each team member and rigor in scene are the signature features of this group, promoting a wide repertoire that eases the enjoyment of the audience of the most diverse genres conforming the Cuban musical identity. Boleros, Son, Guarachas, Cha Cha Chá plus other Caribbean rhythms and songs from the Latin American repertoire are embellished in the voices of Cubavana, proving its high professional level all the time.

Followers of a work of deep popular root and having a strong level of summoning, Cubavana Sextet, have been performing at prestigious national scenes for the likes of la Bodeguita del Medio, Marina Hemingway, Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba, International Cabaret in Varadero plus other overseas outings around Mexico, United States, Spain, France and Turkey, offering their art to more than one thousand spectators and sharing scenes with such luminaries as Compay Segundo, Buena vista Social Club and Kerem Gorsev, famous Turkish musician, evincing their undoubted professionality and gaining the favorable appraisal of an audience expert on Cuban music.

Another outstanding feature of Cubavana is the skill they have to transform themselves into Cuban traditional music representatives, becuase in diverse countries they have given lessons and master lectures managing to fulfill experts`expectatives at auditoriums and such was the case of the lectures given at the New Orleans` Tulane University.

Cubavana`s art has always impressed due to the original way of approaching songs by Matamoros, Benny Moré, Joseíto Fernández and some other contemporary songwriters for the likes of Adalberto Alvarez and Mayito Rivera, Cubavana decided to rule on this popular genre and it was not by chance, international critics consider they are surprising, genuine and faithful defenders of our Cuban culture.
